Meet Quetzalcoatl

This wonderful clay mask is Rafael's version of the shell-mosaic

piece of Quetzalcoatl, the only Aztec god to have a human avatar.

The original mask is in the Folkart Museum in Mexico City.

Quetzalcoatl was the Aztec god linked to daylight, clear thinking and a good life.  As Quetzacoatl-Ehecatl he was lord of the morning winds that bring light to the fields. The mask represents Quetzalcoatl bursting forth from the jaws of a coyote, representing life springing from the Earth. In the form of a priest he was a man painted black with a long beard.

This Mexican clay pottery wood-fired sculpture mask is 18" x 15".  It is made to hang inside, or outside under a covered porch.
